The Country Music Association of Ontario (CMAO) Announces Inaugural Award Nominees

The Country Music Association of Ontario (CMAO) held a press conference in Toronto on April 9, 2013 to announce the nominees for the Inaugural CMAO Award Show to be held on May 27 2013 at the prestigious Markham Theatre(Markham,Ontario). This is the first for this Association, which was formed over four years ago by veteran music industry folks, who believed there was so much country music talent in Ontario, that they needed their own association.

The eligibility for a nominee was:
1. For a group or duo at least 50% of the members must meet the Ontario residency requirement.
2. Must be a business that is operating in the province of Ontario.
3. To be considered an Ontario resident by the CMAO, the artist must have been born in the province of Ontario; OR maintained a permanent resident in the province of Ontario for a period of two consecutive years.
4. Artists have one recording that was commercially released between January 1, 2009 and November 30, 2012.

The category eligibilities was:
FEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR
This Award is based upon individual performance, either on record or in person within the eligibility period. One Award is presented to the Artist. The artist must meet the residency eligibility criteria and have a commercially released recording that was released between January 1, 2009 and November 30, 2012.

This Award is based upon individual performance, either on record or in person within the eligibility period. One Award is presented to the Artist. The artist must meet the residency eligibility criteria and have a commercially released recording that was released between January 1, 2009 and November 30, 2012. 

GROUP OR DUO OF THE YEAR
A Group or Duo is defined as an Act, composed of two or more people, all of whom normally perform together. The Act may include an individual who has, or currently does perform, as a solo artist under a name different than that of the group or duo. This Award is based on the performance of the Group or Duo as a unit, either on record or in person within the eligibility period. At least 50% of the Group or Duo must meet the CMAO’s residency eligibility criteria. The group or duo must meet the residency eligibility criteria and have a commercially released recording that was released between January 1, 2009 and November 30, 2012.

This category is open only to those artists who are not being nominated for Female, Male, or Group of Duo of the year categories.However, any year’s Rising Star nominees were still eligible for Album, Single and Songwriter categories in that same year. No artist or group shall be nominated for the Rising Star Award more than twice. The artist must meet the residency eligibility criteria and have a commercially released recording that was released between January 1, 2009 and November 30, 2012. 

SINGLE OF THE YEAR
This Award is for single tracks only. Tracks from albums are not eligible unless they have been released as singles during the eligibility period. The artist must meet the residency eligibility criteria and have a commercially released recording that was released between January 1, 2009 and November 30, 2012.

This Award is not based on the songwriters’ body of work, but rather an individual song released to radio during the eligibility period. A song from a Greatest Hits album is eligible. A songwriter(s) may receive multiple nominations determined by the release of their songs within the eligibility period. Consideration should be given to lyrics, music, and public acceptance of the song. One Award is presented to (each of) the songwriter(s). The songwriter(s) must meet the residency eligibility criteria and have had a song(s) commercially released on a recording by themselves or another artist that was released between January 1, 2009 and November 30, 2012.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
This Award is for an album as a whole unit. An Album is defined as a project containing no less than six (6) tracks and can be a special project or commemorative package. The Album must have been released during the eligibility period and have a commercially released recording that was released between January 1, 2009 and November 30, 2012.

This award recognizes the Canadian country radio station that exemplifies the development of Canadian country talent through the presentation of music on their station through (but not limited to) community involvement, promotions, leadership and recognition. Major Market is considered to be a radio station that is based in a city with 100,000 plus population.

RADIO STATION OF THE YEAR (Secondary Market)
This Award recognizes the Canadian country radio station that exemplifies the development of Canadian country talent through presentation of the music on their station through (but not limited to) community involvement, promotions, leadership and recognition. A secondary market station is defined as a radio station that is based in a community with less than a 100,000 population.

CMAO 2013 Nominations for Inaugural Award Show were announced at the new headquarters of Corus Entertainment, the new corporate headquarters for  is a 46,500 square metre (500,000 square foot) office and broadcast centre located at the water’s edge in downtown Toronto. Housed in this beautiful facility is a small theatre, where the CMAO announced the nominees for:
