The generation before us created Christmas music that has survived the test of time – Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra all come back into rotation every year along with Brenda Lee’s ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ and Bobby Helms’ ‘Jingle Bell Rock’.

Our generation has hits that now also get played every year, John Lennon’s ‘And So This Is Christmas’, Bryan Adams’ ‘Something About Christmas Time’, Paul McCartney’s ‘Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time’, Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas’ and the epic Band Aid ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas amongst many others.

One very special Christmas tradition happens in Toronto, Ontario every year. The Andy Kim Christmas Show, an annual fundraiser that has artists donating their time and talent to aide a charity every year. Andy Kim is the famed singer/songwriter who is the driving force behind this yearly music event. ‘Year after year it amazes me how many artists contact us and want to perform for free. I am humbled by how much the music world wants to give to make it a successful fundraiser and I would love to say yes to them all but we only have one night to make the magic happen.’

Andy Kim found fame in New York City at just 16 years old when he wrote “How'd We Ever Get This Way?” the first of nine Billboard Top 40 hits, including #1 songs “Rock Me Gently” and “Sugar, Sugar”, names as one of Billboard's ‘Greatest Songs of All Time.’ A true Canadian son, Andy has been awarded the country's top industry honor twice; the JUNO Award for outstanding achievements in the record industry, as well as the "Indie Award" for Favorite Solo Artist in 2005.

Over his epic career, Andy has sold over 30 million records, with songs covered by music history's greats, including Wilson Pickett, Tom Jones, Michelle Wright, Ike & Tina Turner, and Bob Marley and has even been said to influence 80’s metal band Def Leppard. He has also performed and co-wrote songs with Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies and Ron Sexsmith. One of his biggest hits ‘Rock Me Gently’ was even used as a Jeep commercial.

A native of Montreal, Quebec, now maintaining homes both in Los Angeles California and Toronto, Ontario, Andy Kim talks of his childhood memories of Christmas. “I still feel melancholy when it all comes back to me, all the memories in Montreal of my family, the lights, downtown, and the Christmas spirit. My brother Michael & myself helping my Mom carry our Christmas tree from Jean Talon market to Du Casineau & St. Denis. My family was such an important part of what made Christmas so special to me and I was blessed to have that in my life. I want to give back and try to help others who might need our help. The Andy Kim Christmas Show has become so important to me as a way to give back, not just professionally but personally.”

“ALL the proceeds from this event are donated directly to an organization and every year we pick one that involves children and family. This year we have chosen CAMH Gifts of Light Program and we are hoping to raise much needed dollars to help them to continue their great work.’ Through Gifts of Light we are helping to create thoughtful gifts for a meaningful experience this Holiday Season.” The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada's largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, as well as one of the world's leading research centres in the area of addiction and mental health. CAMH combines clinical care, research, education, policy development and health promotion to help transform the lives of people affected by mental health and addiction issues. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is Canada’s leading hospital for mental health. Yet it is the only hospital in Toronto without a gift shop. Because of the stigma surrounding mental illness, many of our patients do not receive the small comforts nor the visitors that can lift the spirits of those in treatment. Enter CAMH Foundation’s Gifts of Light. Since its inception in 2008, this beloved program has become a vital way for donors to connect with our patients on a personal level, delivering gifts and hope - directly to those who need it most. Over 5,000 gifts later, Gifts of Light is now a year round program, delivering tangible gifts and meaningful experiences to patients throughout the year and throughout their journey of recovery. Each gift offers a warm smile and a helping hand to patients who have taken a courageous step to seek the help they need.
