The Great Canadian PoeTrain Tour Set to Hit the Rails

The Great Canadian PoeTrain Tour organized a successful fundraiser on February 12th in spite of the severe cold weather, which kept numbers down. Those in attendance had an entertaining time.Attendees were the League, Brick Books, and the Ontario Poetry Society who providing books, and Ed Baranosky who gifting the paintings for the fundraiser. Special thanks to Kent Bowman and his family Gay, Sabrina, and Josh for helping organize the evening. Some attendees commented that it was the best poetry event experienced in years. Max Layton, Robert Priest, and Cathy Petch’s collective witty poetry, skits, and song lead everyone through an evening of laughter and fun. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Patrick Connors. A group of poets, musicians, artists etc. are traveling across Canada this April to celebrate and promote awareness of National Poetry Month. To date there are 26 poets signed up to travel various lengths of the journey. Events in Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver along with performances on the Via Rail "Canadian" car are being planned. Via Rail has also provided a free cabin to international travel writer Laura Byrne Paquet from Ottawa to accompany them on this historic trip. Dennis Reid, League of Canadian Poet member and past president, has been appointed the “World’s first PoeTrain Laureate”. Grant support sponsoring poets Mick Burrs, Dennis Reid, Marsha Barber, and Debbie Okun Hill from the Canada Poetry Tours program to read on the PoeTrain has been official acknowledged by the League of Canadian Poets and the Canada Council for the Arts. There is an open invitation to the Toronto Poetry community and its representatives to come together for one evening (April 17) to celebrate and share the solidarity of poetry in Canada in all its diversity.
The kick off event is April 17 kickoff event for Toronto at the Hot House Restaurant & Bar 35 Church Street 7:30 pm with Toronto Poet Laureate George Elliott Clarke as featured poet. The Poe Trainers from four provinces and poet/musicians Paul Sanderson, Ian Ferrier will also perform. Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be Toronto League rep Kate Marshall Flaherty. Come meet the PoeTrainers at dinner from 6:00 to 7:30pm, then stay to hear Toronto’s Poet Laureate and PoeTrain poets’ open mic.
Further announcements will be made short about a mysterious, digitally-savvy guest will be riding the rails in an inaugural trip.
