ACCLAIMED Canadian Singer/songwriter Jill Barber SET TO RELEASE MUCH Anticipated new ALBUM mischievous moon

Jill Barber

Toronto, ON – Canadian songstress Jill Barber’s career is evolving from her original acoustic, folk sound with the release of her fourth album Mischievous Moon set for release on April 5, 2011 (Outside Music). With this new offering, Barber collaborates once again with longtime producer, Les Cooper, as well as recording with her touring band for the first time. Additionally, the album was recorded in Toronto and strings were recorded at the famed Glenn Gould Studio by the Mischievous Moon Chamber Players. The result is an album with distinctive vocals and theatrical orchestration that truly showcases Barber’s ability to take audiences back in time.

“I aspire to write songs that evoke a feeling of another time and a space, a sensation that you've felt before but can't quite place,” says Barber. “Classic songwriting deals with the universal themes; love, loss... but great songwriting means that it always feels individual to the listener. My hope is to capture the imagination of my listeners the same way my favourite records have inspired me.”

Barber’s acclaimed 2008 album Chances features a classic, 1940’s-esque sound, inspired by artists including Ella Fitzgerald and Edith Piaf. In 2009, Chances was long-listed for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, launching Barber into the spotlight and establishing her as Canada’s romantic, musical darling.

With Mischievous Moon, Barber reveals to fans another side to her creative musical talents, particularly showcased on her first single, Tell Me. With orchestral overtures and moody undertones of soul, blues and jazz, Barber’s distinct and sultry voice shines through. Tell Me truly shows fans a new, mischievous side of Barber. While Chances could be considered Barber’s album of romantic courtship and falling in love, Mischievous Moon is about exploring the relationship, uncovering every aspect of an established romance and then delving in a little deeper.

As a performer, Barber charms her audiences while weaving a romantic spell through her passionate lyrics and captivating performances. Indeed, romance plays a huge role in both her life and her art. With Barber’s recent marriage, love is truly Barber’s key muse and inspiration. Barber is sure to mesmerize audiences all over again with Mischievous Moon.

Recently inspired by her growing French-speaking fan base, Barber has begun singing and recording in both English and French.  After recording her latest album, she enrolled in a French immersion school in the south of France and now hopes to be able to bond with French-speaking audiences everywhere. As evidence of her dedication, Tell Me will be released in both French and English (Dis-moi).

Aside from recording and performing, Barber released her first book in 2010 titled, Baby's Lullaby, a charming read geared at infants under the age of two. The book was based on a lullaby that Jill wrote in support of Read To Me, a Nova Scotia-based organization that promotes early literacy.

In support of the upcoming album release, Barber will perform several dates across Canada this spring in addition to joining Canadian musician, Michael Kaeshammer as a very special guest at the legendary Massey Hall in Toronto on April 30, 2011. Barber also performs at a co-headlining show with Kaeshammer at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver on May 18, 2011, certainly Barber’s biggest show in the city since she moved there 2 years ago.
