The 18 year old pride of Elkhorn Manitoba, Kendra Kay is getting set to light up the charts with her new 6 song EP “Broken” with the single “Some Things Go Together Like That” just released to radio.

The story behind the birth of this EP is interesting.  Kendra was in Nashville, Tennessee where a chance meeting on Lower  Broadway led to her working with renowned producer and songwriter Jeff Jones, who had produced a couple of Terri Clark albums. Jeff was impressed with Kendra’s talent and agreed to work with her on her journey. I met up with Jeff in Edmonton at the CCMA’s where he was accompanying Kendra at various showcases she was performing at and mentoring her. They were introducing people to her new CD Broken that Jeff had produced. I asked him about his experience with Kendra. “I really enjoy working with Kendra Kay. She has a great tone and quality to her voice that makes it a pleasure to work with in the studio. She also is very mature and talented for her young age and really held her on with some of Nashville's finest players and singers” Jeff went on to say, “I’m really proud of this record and believe has what it takes to go a long way in this business.” Kendra shared the fact that she too was thrilled to work with Jeff. “He is amazing to work with, on stage and in the studio. He is a real pro and so easy to work with. I’m really proud of this CD.”

Carly D’Amico from Kingston 93.5Carly D’Amico from Kingston 93.5Kendra started performing atthe age of eight in her hometown of Elkhorn, Manitoba, population 500. She was encouraged by her family and her music teacher and went on to perform at rodeos, festivals, hockey games, and radio stations, and won a Star Search radio contest at Yorkton, Saskatchewan’s GX94. Although she didn't quite realize it at the time, Kendra now admits that even at that age she was hooked on music.”I was a hockey player, “  she said with a look of amusement in her eyes. “I might have continued playing and gone on  to play at the  college level while  and studying  to be a vet. But I hurt my shoulder and couldn’t play anymore. But music is what I love to do so I know I’m where I’m supposed to be. I have so many great people around me and am really looking forward to see what lays ahead musically.”

The CD starts with “ Swinging Doors” a song with great radio potential that Brett James had a hand in writing. “ Long Way Down” that producer Jeff Jones was a co-writer of  is another radio song , great vocal and strong production. The single “ Some Things Go Together Like That” is a great choice for a lead single, showcasing Kendra’s voice and highlighting the clean production. “Together We Are Strong” written by Kendra and Jeff  is a well crafted song of true love. The title track “Broken” and the closer “ It Was” are both written in part by one of Canada’s best songwriters Jason McCoy.

This CD Broken can hold its own with anything out there on either side of the border.

Good work Kendra Kay and I’m pretty sure we’re going to hearing you for many years to come.
