Alt.Folkster Kylie Fox Pens Letter to a Friend Journeying into Motherhood in New Single, “Avocado”

Fri Sep 11, 2020

Alt-folk Canadiana artist Kylie Fox celebrates the launch of her newest single “Avocado,” a heartfelt, tongue-in-cheek letter-in-song to her friend (and first time mothers everywhere).

Watch and listen to “Avocado” here:

“There is a trend in millennial pregnancies where the process is tracked through an app that describes the mother’s weekly progress,” Fox explains of the song’s context and inspiration. “Usually the videos make an effort to compare the size of the fetus to that of a fruit or vegetable.

“I was lucky enough to catch the screening of the 16-week video which told us that my friend’s child was about the size of an avocado,” she continues. “This song is a letter to a mom-to-be facing the uncertainties and excitements of expecting a first child.”

JUNO & CFMA-Nominated Craig Cardiff Inspires Ottawa-Carleton District School Students with Song in Hands-On Songwriting Workshop

Fri Jun 26, 2020

JUNO and CFMA-nominated Canadian singer/songwriter Craig Cardiff knows how hard it can be for young students to tell their stories or express their feelings as it is — let alone now, during a year like this one.

It’s one of the reasons the gold-selling artist continues to hold his highly sought after songwriting workshops, including pivoting online to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions.

He even set up a newly minted record label — Quarantine Collaborations / Workshop Label — for the students in the process.

With his current crop of workshops hosting hundreds of students in grades 7 - 12 throughout the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, Cardiff has and continues to be at the craft for more than a decade, providing similar experiences for students across Canada, the United States, and Hong Kong in and around his usually busy tour schedule.

“I don’t care who you are — everyone has a song inside,” Cardiff says. He’d know: he’s released 16 albums over his 20+ year career, and counting.

“Each one of us has a song that got us through a hard time.”

Toronto Blues-Rocker MELANIE? Hits 70%+ Goal In Masks For Music Campaign In Just Three Weeks

Fri May 29, 2020

CLASH Magazine calls Canadian artist MELANIE? “defiant in her outlook, staunch in her approach, and completely, utterly ruthless in her execution.” If that’s the homegrown Toronto-based artist’s approach to her day-to-day blues-rockin’ play, you can only imagine her new initiative — Masks for Music, a fundraising sale in support of Spotify’s COVID-19 Music Relief Project and the Unison Benevolent Fund — is given the same gusto.

“One of the communities that has been most impacted by COVID-19 is the one I’m a part of: Artists and musicians,” Melanie says. “With tours, live shows, and festivals cancelled — not to mention collaborative studio and writing sessions on hold and creative productions delayed — musicians and artists who were already struggling to make ends meet or access important resources are in need of even more assistance.

“We have an ambitious fundraising goal,” she adds, noting the campaign’s aim to raise $10,000 in the span of three weeks time. “Spotify Canada has pledged to match any donations made to Unison dollar for dollar, up to a collective $10 Million, so any money raised will be doubled!”

Vancouver-based Canadian band Garrett releases “Hero” Video in Honour of the Front-Line Workers

Fri May 22, 2020

There’s an adage in the music business, “you can’t buy experience” and that’s one thing the Vancouver prog-rock group has in spades. Garrett is a group of seasoned musicians with confidence and skill that comes with years of honing their skills. With Sean Garrett as the frontman, Brian Jones on guitar, drummer Mike Mallais, Garry Koenig on bass guitar, they form a power trio of funky and rock-solid rhythms and soaring guitar lines to give life to Sean’s well crafted songs.

Sean Garrett had this to say about how the release of “Hero” came about, "Hero was originally written about somebody I highly respected, whose advice changed my life. I wanted to dedicate this song to all our personal heroes and to all the front line and emergency workers in these difficult times.

The video is a montage of the many spontaneous tributes that people are doing in honour of the frontline workers who risk their own lives to save and protect ours.

Millie Small of ‘My Boy Lollipop’ Fame Passes Away

Fri May 15, 2020

Credited as the first Jamaican Artist to Break with a Top Ten Chart Hit (Little Millie Small) died Monday, May 5, 2020 in England, she was 73 years old.

Some musical history buffs like to say she had a reggae hit, but in actuality the sound of “My Boy Lollipop” reflected more of Ska and Rock Steady sounds.

The song was a huge hit on the charts in 1964 and peaked at #2 on the Cashbox Charts on July 4, 1964, with the #1 position being held by the Beach Boys with “I Get Around.” The song reputedly sold over six million copies. It also reached #2 in England, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Plus, it was #1 in Australia.

Listen in to My Boy Lollipop here:

The song was used a 1985 episode of “Miami Vice”; was heard in a British TV series “Heartbeat”; made the soundtrack of the 1997 Spice Girls’ movie “Spice World”; and was featured in the London 2012 Olympics’ opening ceremony.

Cashbox Canada and the Lucky 13

Fri May 15, 2020

Thirteen years ago I was out shopping at Canadian Tire on a Saturday – a tradition in our country. I bumped into an old colleague of mine from the nightclub days who was on his cell phone when he saw me and said to the person he was talking to that I was the one he needed to ask ‘the question’.

He handed me his cell phone and this very Southern drawl came across the line from Bruce Elrod in South Carolina, who had resurrected Cashbox Magazine in the USA and was looking for someone to run the same thing in Canada. I told Bruce I would only do it if I could own it, never thinking he would say yes.

Bruce Elrod said yes. It changed my life.

And so it began, Cashbox Canada was born.

Fri May 08, 2020

Canadian singer/songwriter, composer, producer and screenwriter Anthony Aramouni has combined his ear for music and eye for film in this, his richly textural, hypnotically reverent tribute track, “L. Cohen” — available now.
