Montreal, QC Indigenous record label, Musique Nomade, is redefining what it means to be a record label in Canada. Moving beyond the industry-wide structure of facilitating the creation of and releasing music, the multilingual and artist-first label is also a service provider - one that uplifts Indigenous voices, removes systemic barriers, and reimagines how music can be created and shared. Through its holistic approach to artistic development and cultural representation through their values of fulfillment, relief, support, diversity, representation, and heritage, Musique Nomade has built an accessible system for Indigenous artists that embraces language, location, and genre.
Founded in 2006, the non-profit label has released projects by numerous award-winning artists, including Anachnid, Laura Niquay and Kanen, while simultaneously playing a major role in developing talent and providing direct access to music production equipment and producers themselves in areas without music creation tools. Starting in 2011, Musique Nomade launched their Stopover program, a unique mobile recording residency program that brings fully equipped music studios and experienced professionals to remote First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities across Quebec. These creative hubs allow artists to record music, shoot professional videos, and engage in career-building workshops, all without the need for travel or prohibitive financial investment. Each stopover culminates in inclusion on the label’s On the Road album series, along with digital promotion through the Nikamowin platform, coined the “Indigenous Spotify” offering unprecedented visibility for emerging Indigenous talent.
The latest result of this groundbreaking process is On the Road - Wemotaci, a bold and genre-bending compilation album that showcases the rich musical voices of the Wemotaci community in Quebec. At its heart is FDA (Fiers d’être autochtones – Proud to Be Indigenous), a powerful Atikamekw rap collective formed by seven young artists from the communities of Wemotaci, Manawan, and Opitciwan. With their explosive track “Kecko minat”, FDA captures the urgency and emotion of youth navigating systemic injustice, cultural survival, and identity reclamation.
On the Road - Wemotaci also features contributions from Kris Kinokewin, Kawish, LaBlackStar, Lenny Coocoo, SKL, and Myrann Newashish, incorporating multiple genres from Rap and Singer-Songwriter to Traditional music in a bold sonic project brought to life by creating an opportunity and experience for artists to thrive. The album is a powerful testament to Musique Nomade’s commitment to not only amplifying Indigenous voices but co-creating platforms where those voices can thrive on their own terms.
Following the Spring 2025 release of On the Road - Wemotaci, Musique Nomade plans to visit Pessamit, and Wendake, with the stopover visits for the year culminating with a visit to Montreal, open to artists who live in and around the city. Aiming to expand the Stopover program beyond the borders of Quebec, Musique Nomade continues to explore new partnerships and opportunities that will open doors for more Indigenous artists across Canada to access professional recording environments within their own communities.
This Spring, Musique Nomade co-hosted a live showcase event with SiriusXM Canada in Montreal spotlighting artists from Musique Nomade’s growing roster and their streaming service, Nikamowin, as well as local talent, offering a bilingual audience the chance to experience the vibrant sounds and stories that define Musique Nomade’s work in the greater Montreal musical landscape. Label artists Soleil Launière, Anachnid, and Eadsé joined Nikamowin featured artist Nukad, and local talent Dominique Fils-Aimée, Klô Pelgag, VioleTT Pi, Jorane as performers at the June 11 2025 event at Montreal’s Club Soda.
With each stopover and every artist it supports, Musique Nomade continues to reshape the Canadian music landscape by bridging the gap of access for Indigenous communities and building sustainable systems where those voices lead. Through programs like Stopover, digital tools like Nikamowin, and powerful showcases like the upcoming Montreal event, the label is creating a new blueprint for music creation rooted in community, culture, and accessibility. As it looks ahead to future collaborations and cross-provincial expansion, Musique Nomade remains steadfast in its mission: to empower Indigenous artists to thrive on their own terms, in their own languages, and from wherever they call home.
