Top Oscar Winners for Original Score

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) gives the Academy Awards the best films and soundtracks each year. The Academy's members vote for top actors, actresses, movies, and songs. It awards the winners of each category with a copy of the Academy Award of Merit. AMPAS awards the Academy Award for Best Original Score to the best music body through dramatic underscoring. Here are four top Oscar winners for the original score.

1.    HildurGudnadottir

Hildur is the first woman to win the Best Original Score Oscar award. She received the award onstage for Joker in the 92nd awards at the Dolby Theatre on February 9, 2020. Hildur is among the seven women who have ever been nominated in a score composition category. Marilyn Berman won an award for Yentl together with Alan Bergman and Michel Legrand. Anne Dudley won for The Full Monty while Rachel Portman won an original score for Emma.

Gudnadottir encouraged girls, mothers, and women to speak up when they hear music bubbling. Before winning the Original Score, she won the Golden Globe, the BAFTA, and Hollywood Critics Association. Most online casinos in Canada gave Hildur high odds during the nominations. She defeated Alexandre Desplat, John Williams, Thomas Newman, and Randy Newman.

2.    The Hateful Eight-Ennio Morricone

The Hateful Eight is the soundtrack of The Hateful Eight motion picture. Ennio Morricone conducted, composed and orchestrated the soundtrack while Quentin Tarantino produced the Tarantino film. The original music lasts for 50 minutes. The Hateful Eight was Morricone's first original score for a Western movie since Buddy Goes West. It features Regan's Theme in The Exorcist II and Morricone's Score from The Thing (1982).

The album comprises three soundtracks featured in Apple Blossom (2000), There Won't Be Many Coming Home (1966) and Now You're All Alone (1972). It won the Academy Award for Best Original Score and a Golden Globe on February 28, 2016.

3.    Grand Budapest Hotel-Alexandre Desplat

Wes Anderson wrote, directed and produced The Grand Budapest Hotel film in 2014. The comedy-drama movie features Adrien Brody, F. Murray Abraham, Ralph Fiennes, Willem Dafoe, Mathieu Amalric, Harvey Keitel, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray, Jude Law, Jason Schwartzman, Saoirse Ronan, Edward Norton, Tony Revolori, Owen Wilson, Lea Seydoux, Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton.

During the 87th Academy Awards, the Grand Budapest Hotel got nine nominations that included the Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design. It won four of these awards and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy.

4.    Black Panther-Ludwig Goransson

Black Panther is a 2018 American superhero movie whose soundtrack, Black Panther is based on Marvel Comics. Ludwig Goransson composed the original score and Kendrick Lamar produced the original songs. Interscope Records released the soundtrack on February 9, 2018. Hollywood Record released Goransson's score as Black Panther (Original Score) on February 16. It won Best Original Scores in the Grammy Awards and the Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences started awarding films for their original score in 1935. The category was initially known as Best Scoring. It added the Best Original Score category four years later. HildurGudnadottir, The Hateful Eight, Grand Budapest Hotel and La La Land are among the top Oscar winners for the original score.
