Time Passages will publish JOURNEY: WORLDS APART, the definitive accounting of the multiplatinum “Don’t Stop Believin’” Rock and Roll Hall of Fame hitmakers written by award-winning journalist Nick DeRiso, on December5, 2023.

A multiple “Columnist of the Year” award-winner for the USA Today network, DeRiso conducted dozens of interviews to compile a book that’s much more than just a detailed band biography – it’s an all-access backstage pass for casual and devoted Journey fans alike.

Journey started in the San Francisco Bay area as a dream for former Santana road manager Herbie Herbert, who thought he could build a blockbuster band out of the remnants of post-Woodstock Santana with Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon. Herbert achieved that lofty goal, but it would take Journeya few albums and the arrival of front man Steve Perry to secure the band’s success. By the time Rolie exited at the turn of the ‘80s, Journey was already a multi-platinum juggernaut – and would only achieve greater fame and fortune with the addition of Jonathan Cain from one of Journey’s former opening acts, The Babys.

Solo projects and lengthy periods apart slowed Journey’s momentum until Perry finally left for good in the late ‘90s. Then the band faced one of its biggest challenges: whether and how to move forward without the singer who had redefined their sound forever on songs like “Open Arms,” “Only the Young,” and “When You Love a Woman.”

DeRiso talks with co-founding members Schon, Rolie, and Prairie Princeto help guide the story from their earliest roots in Santana, along with long-time Herbert confidant Pat Morrow. DeRiso then follows Journey toward its pop-culture superstardom through additional conversations with later-era collaborators Cain, Steve Smith, DeenCastronovo, Steve Augeri, plus scores of producers, sidemen, label representatives, and acknowledged experts including former Rolling Stone contributing editor David Wild, original MTV VJ Martha Quinn, and longtime San Francisco Chronicle music writer Joel Selvin, the latter of whom covered Journey from the band’s earliest days.

Along the way, JOURNEY: WORLDS APART emerges as the definitive look back at Journey, with deep explorations of every era, every album, and every song. Pathway collaborations and key side projects complete this detailed analysis, as DeRiso speaks with John Waite, Jan Hammer, Marco Mendoza, Ron Wikso, and others.

Spanning 417 pages, this extensive Journey history contains dozens of rare photos from across the years. Also, it includes an exclusive appendix of never-before-seen concept art, designs, sketches, and illustrations of Journey projects — some accepted and some that never made it to production — from the masterful hand of famed rock illustrator Stanley Mouse.

DeRiso is assistant managing editor with Townsquare Media. He has been named “Columnist of the Year” five times by the Associated Press and Louisiana Press Association; he also oversaw the AP’s “Top 10 in the Nation” section.

JOURNEY: WORLDS APART will be available on Amazon.com in soft cover with black & white interior for $29.99 and in hardback with full-color interior for $89.99.
