Mazacote Patria
Fri Nov 01, 2019
Cashbox Canada

MAZACOTE is a hard-hitting world Latin party band playing brass soaked tropical dance beats. Inspired by the sounds of Colombia, Mozambique and Nicaragua, they weave driving rhythms and heavy grooves with a socially conscious message.  The band is set to release their 3rd album Patria set for release on Justin Time/Nettwerk in October 2019.

While the music is inspired by the vibrant sounds of Colombia, Mozambique and Nicaragua, the lyrics from lead singer David Lopez are a conversation with his Nicaraguan homeland: “In the first years of my family’s life in Canada, the longing for that life I used to know was very strong. At the end of my first trip back to Nicaragua, it was hard to leave and return to Canada. Years have gone by, and although I don’t feel that way anymore, I wanted to capture that all-too-common longing and nostalgia that many immigrants feel. It’s possible that the memories may be tainted by hardship and suffering, but deep down that longing never goes away”. Conversely, the first single ‘Levanta la Copa’ is meant to capture the joy of a carefree night dancing with friends, or as Lopez says: “this rumba is good to forget all the bad things in life”.

Performing together since 2009, Mazacote features the captivating voice of Nicaraguan singer/songwriter David Lopez and a groove-heavy rhythm section with Frankie Hidalgo on Bass, Chris Couto on Timbales, Robin Layne on Congas, Japanese pianist Niho Takase and jazz trumpeter Malcolm Aiken.

The band has released their 3rd album "Patria" on Justin Time/Nettwerk Music in October 2019 and will be supporting it with tours across Canada and the USA.

Mazacote performs across the globe at music festivals and dance clubs, bringing their world dance party vibes to audiences of all ages! Recent highlights include headlining the Vancouver International Salsa Festival with New York Latin jazz trombone legend Jimmy Bosch, as well as main stage appearances at the Harmony Arts Festival, Townsite Jazz Festival, Carnaval del Sol,  the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, the Winterruption Arts and Culture Festival and the Global Music Festival.
